As a kid growing up on New England, I used to think that heading to the Maine coast in the summer wasn’t THAT special. After a 25+ year hiatus, and watching my wife and daughter experience it for the first time this year, I realize now what an absolutely incredible place it is. Obviously, the seafood is amazing everywhere you go. But the weather (highs in the 70s!), homes and landscape generally (Kennebunkport is frozen in time), and atmosphere of each little seaside town are like no place else. Is the ocean water so cold it hurts to get in? Sure. But after a long beach day, you can pop into any one of a dozen cedar-shake shops on the water to get a wild blueberry soda and fresh oysters.

My summer was spent chasing around our almost 1-year-old as he goes from crawling to taking his first steps. We also took our first family vacation to Lake Ontario for our annual 4th of July trip. This year was especially memorable as it was my son’s first trip to the lake house, along with his cousins. We spent our days swimming, relaxing, and eating plenty of ice cream!

The Kuljurgis Family’s Summer was an eventful Summer of firsts and lasts. There was the Bat Mitzvah of its youngest member, as well as her spending a week at the Outer Banks with another family. The son attended Boy Scout summer camp, likely for the last time. The highlight of the summer was the trip to Los Angeles, CA, and Bozeman, MT, to see family. There I achieved my lifelong goals of seeing the Jaws shark on the Universal Studios Tour, having a beer at Moe’s Bar from The Simpsons, going white-water rafting (admittedly on weak class I rapids), and seeing Yellowstone National Park. Having achieved these goals, my new ones are to be an actual guest star on The Simpsons and successfully fight off a grizzly bear in justifiable self-defense.
Jeremy Rachlin
Over the summer, the Rachlin family traversed territory from 25 feet under the sea to 11,500 feet above sea level! We started the summer snorkeling through incredible natural coves and under huge rock formations in The Baths on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands (and I learned that you can still get swimmer’s ear as an adult). A picture of my daughter descending into the grottos is above. Weeks later, we found ourselves high in the alpine tundra above the tree line in Rocky Mountain National Park, high on the mountain peaks surrounded by herds of elk. We also managed to catch a concert at the legendary Red Rocks. That said, Montgomery County, Maryland, may not be as scenic, but it is home!
Meg Rosan
The Rosans traveled quite a bit for lacrosse tournaments this summer. But whenever we could, we made it over to the Eastern Shore for boat rides, water skiing, pool time, and picking crabs.

Summer, as usual, was a whirlwind. The first half was chock-full of club lacrosse tournaments for both my boys, which took us to tropical venues such as the Delaware near-beaches (but not the beach), Kirkwood Sports Complex, Liberty Sports Park in Prince George’s County, and the Germantown Soccerplex. Once the dust settled on a successful summer lacrosse season, we braved the wilds of Costa Rica, where we lived amongst the feral squirrels, iguanas, monkeys, sloths, scorpions, pit vipers, poison frogs, and tarantulas (oh my)! We even got to relax and recharge our batteries for about 5 minutes!
