How BDBF Spent Our Summer Vacation 2023

Last year, BDBF attorneys shared our summer vacation experiences in one of our surprisingly most-read-ever articles. We didn’t think we were that interesting. Never one to be shy to reuse a good idea, we thought we’d recap our vacations of summer 2023!

Liz Farley

For my summer vacation, I traveled to Austin, Texas to meet my nephew who was born in August! Most of my time was spent staring at baby Theo … but when I was able to look away, I watched the Women’s World Cup matches, played board games with my sister and brother-in-law, and tried to avoid heat stroke!

Jeremy Rachlin

This summer, my wife and I explored the Pacific Northwest, spending two days in Vancouver before taking a cruise to Alaska. We were up close and personal with humpback whales, seals, bald eagles, and amazing scenes that pictures barely do justice. Probably the coolest part of the experience (literally) was taking a helicopter to the top of the Herbert Glacier 4,000 feet above Juneau and exploring the glacier. I had never been on a helicopter ride and like any good lawyer, I signed the waiver without reading it.

Meg Rosan

This summer our family enjoyed several weekends of cruising on the Chesapeake Bay, from Annapolis to Cambridge, St. Michael’s and Rock Hall. My oldest enjoyed lacrosse camps and outdoor camps on the Bay. We took both kids on a couple of quick trips out of the area for a family wedding in Florida, and for some beach time on Nantucket. All of the Rosans are looking forward to the start of another school year!

Dan Shaivitz

Summer vacation is a wonderful time to sit back, relax, and enjoy some quality time with the family. That is, if you live in any household other than the Shaivitz household. For us, summer vacation is a chance for me to test the limits of my family’s love by forcing them to prove themselves by way of feats of strength. This year, we sojourned out to Vancouver, British Columbia to enjoy the Pacific coast and mountain lifestyle. Our first couple of stops were to the Capilano Suspension Bridge, and because that only took a few hours we then tackled Grouse Mountain and something called the “Grouse Grind”. For those of you who are uninitiated, the Grouse Grind is a trail hike that takes you straight up the side of Grouse Mountain, which is facilitated by a set of 2,500 rocks and “steps” over 2,600 feet of vertical climb. It took the last of us about an hour and a half to make the climb, and at the top we were treated to an enclosure of grizzly bears and other amusements. Later in our trip, we tackled Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, including extensive hikes at altitudes between 6,000 and 7,000 feet. Finally, we survived renting mountain bikes and touring around Lost Lake and the nearby bike skills courses. I was grateful for the time away and reminder that my family still loves me despite all that torture.

How did you spend your summer? Let our team know in the comments!
