Thanksgiving spread with turkey, pumpkins, and other food

“Hot Take” – a piece of commentary, typically produced quickly in response to a recent event, whose primary purpose is to attract attention

(Oxford’s English Dictionary)

Thanksgiving is a season for “hot takes”.  Whether relating to the food that is served or politics (and we are staying far away from politics in this post and at the Thanksgiving dinner), BDBF attorneys share our hot takes on Thanksgiving!

Tim Canney

There is no such thing as “dressing,” and the term should be cancelled.

My wife is a wonderful southern gal and an amazing cook. She has made my Thanksgivings immeasurably better in so many ways. However, each year she tests our marriage by calling stuffing by its colloquial southern name, “dressing.” She insists that the word “stuffing” only applies if the substance is baked inside the turkey, whereas “dressing” applies when cooked outside the turkey. There is, in fact, a National Stuffing Day that is celebrated on November 21st each year, which in itself should end the argument once and for all. But she and other so-called “dressers” (*trademark pending*) continue to perpetuate historically inaccurate Thanksgiving foodstuff names. It is time for us as a nation to come together and commit to a single, correct, common-sense name: STUFFING.

There is a pernicious stereotype that liking pumpkin spice makes one “basic.”

For those of us who enjoy pumpkin spice muffins and even a pumpkin-spiced coffee now and then, the stigma can make us think twice before ordering. Ultimately, however, one must persevere and not allow the perceptions of others to interfere with the enjoyment of Thanksgiving. Also, go Lions!

Jeremy Rachlin

Pumpkin pie is vastly overrated – if not the worst possible Thanksgiving dessert.

Dessert is the most important part of the Thanksgiving meal. It’s the period at the end of the sentence. The portion of the meal that officially causes you to reach for the Tums. Don’t end my Thanksgiving meal with pumpkin pie. It may be traditional. It’s also horrible. I’m not an anti-pie person. Apple pie, blueberry pie, cherry pie… any of them will do. But pumpkin pie… It’s a hard pass. Any dessert that relies on nutmeg and raisins for flavor just isn’t going to work for this guy.

You DO NOT have to spend Thanksgiving with your extended family!

I enjoy time with loved ones whenever I reasonably can, but I’m also flexible about where and when that must occur. I am grateful for any time with my parents, regardless of whether I see them on the fourth Thursday of November. But if you are with your extended family on Thanksgiving, I hope you’re eating all the pumpkin pie, the stuffing and the dressing, and watching the parade.

Dan Shaivitz

The Thanksgiving Day Parade (and maybe any parade in general) is overrated and should be discontinued.

You can always count on me to be a curmudgeon. Dare I say it: nobody really likes a parade anymore. The shutting down of miles of a major thoroughfare; the absurd amount of pageantry; the extraordinary resources devoted to a prolonged stunt that once was a centerpiece of American culture; and the list goes on. Did I not have my coffee?! Was I bitten by a parade as a child? Who knows! All I want to do is to overeat turkey and “stuffing” (agree with Tim), maybe gobble down some canned cranberry “sauce”, watch football, and throw some pumpkin pie at Jeremy.
