BDBF Spotlights Our Favorite On-Screen Couples

Valentine’s Day is upon us again!

In the annals of television and movie history, there have literally been thousands of on-screen couples.  Some old, some young, some with more chemistry than others, and some cringe-worthy.

We asked BDBF attorneys to “think fast” and give their gut reaction to the following question:

What is your favorite ever on-screen couple?

Chandler and Monica from Friends

My favorite on-screen couple of all time is Monica and Chandler from Friends. I grew up watching Friends and always loved how Monica and Chandler’s romance appears like it started somewhat abruptly.  However, when going back and re-watching you can see how compatible they were from the very beginning when they were just friends.

Chuck and Blair from Gossip Girl

They are the ultimate power couple! Yes, they both manipulated and hurt each other over and over again… but they share the same twisted sensibilities and that’s why they’re a perfect match. Before allowing themselves to be together, they became successful on their own first, which ultimately made them stronger.

Ralph Wiggum and Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons

The Simpsons could not have been timed better to be THE show of my childhood, adolescence, and college years.  I won’t even begin to describe the VHS collections that I had of individually-taped episodes (for you youngsters, this is what we had to do before DVD box sets and before Disney Plus).  There is not a Valentine’s Day that goes by that any Simpsons devotee does not recite the immortal heartbreakingly hopeful line, “You Choo-Choo-Choose Me???”  And the episode “I Love Lisa” has it all.  It is peak Simpsons.  Pop culture references.  Itchy and Scratchy.  Ralph Wiggum’isms.  Lisa breaking Ralph’s heart in slow motion on live TV.  A painful Springfield Elementary School President’s Day pageant.  I could go on and on.  Really, I could.

Sam and Annie from Sleepless in Seattle

I’ve written about Sleepless in Seattle in this space before, but I’ll not hesitate to do it again. I love Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan together in that movie, and also in You’ve Got Mail. And both run a plot parallel to other great on screen couples. In Sleepless in Seattle, we see two sets of characters both watching An Affair to Remember – starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. And woven throughout You’ve Got Mail are conversations about Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy from Pride & Prejudice – a literary couple but one which has also been lovingly portrayed in film.

Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson from Spiderman

As usual, not to be bound by strict limits, I am taking a slight detour on this one.  I am departing from the small screen and silver screen and going with my favorite comic book couple from childhood.  I have always been partial to Peter Parker (Spiderman) and Mary Jane (“MJ”) Watson.  It wasn’t always easy for them and dating is always complicated, let alone when you’re dating or marrying a superhero (just ask my wife!)  But they are a couple for the ages.
