How BDBF Spent Our Summer Vacation

2022

Much like students returning to the first day of school, standing up one-by-one, and telling tales of summer travel to classmates, BDBF attorneys present “how we spent our summer vacation”.

Dan Shaivitz

This summer my family took a trip to southern California and, as part of our tour of the Pacific coast, we visited San Diego.  There were so many beautiful and interesting parts of the city, but my favorite moments were spent in Coronado.  I have always had a fascination with the military and getting to be close to the beaches where Navy SEALs train felt very special.  It was also amazing to tour the decks of the USS Midway and learn about its rich history as one of the Navy’s distinguished aircraft carriers.  My kids and I took turns sitting in the cockpits of retired aircraft, including some fighter jets, and I am not sure it gets much cooler than that!

Taking advantage of our daughter spending time at a sleepaway camp, my wife and I traveled to Dubrovnik, Croatia, to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary.  We explored Dubrovnik and the surrounding Elafiti Islands.  What an incredible city that combined amazing cliffside landscapes, 13th-century history, and crystal clear seas.  Our trip was equal parts exploration and relaxation.  Perhaps the very best day was spent snorkeling through caves, returning to our hotel for a quick nap poolside, followed by an evening of Croatian wine tasting.

This summer I visited the west coast and visited San Francisco, Vancouver, and Seattle. We went on the Alcatraz tour and hiked around Stanley Park. The best part of the trip was on our last day in Seattle and we got to see killer whales on a whale watch. We followed a pod of killer whales for about an hour up and down the coast as they hunted, which was really cool. We also got to see a humpback whale up close.

While our family didn’t travel far this summer, we enjoyed many weekends – and long weekends – cruising on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, soaking up beautiful sunsets, watching bald eagles, blue herons, and osprey, and enjoying the occasional swim!
